Governing Rules for BNMTA

Sonatina/Sonata Festival
1. Students of BNMTA members are eligible to enter the competition for a non- refundable fee of $20. Students of teachers who are not members of BNMTA will pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30.
2. Levels 1-4 will be a non-competitive event and students will be given written feedback from the judges. Levels 5 and above will also receive written feedback. In addition, the judge or judges shall award a first and second place and honorable mention for Levels 5 and above. Judges reserve the right to not award any prize. Judges' decisions are final.
3. Students who wish to perform must have had at least 12 months of piano lessons and have permission from both parent and teacher to enroll.
4. All music must be performed from memory.
5. Music should be performed without repeats, except in the case of a da capo, which completes the form of the piece.
6. Registration, including payment, must be received by deadline. Checks should be made payable to BNMTA.
7. BNMTA members will be expected to work, monitor or assist in some way the day of the Festival.
8. Levels 1-4 are open to the public. No audience will be allowed in the room during the competition for Levels 5 and above.
9. Practice rooms will be made available for each performer, who will be assigned one 15 minute slot only, 25 minutes before the assigned performance time. Performers should register at the front table in the lobby a minimum of 30 minutes before the assigned performance time.
10. Winners will be announced and certificates will be presented when each Level is completed. The evaluation forms will be given to the teachers only and they will give the evaluations to their students at a later time. A recital featuring first place winners from Levels 5 and above will be held in Presser Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University. This will be immediately following completion of all Levels. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the winners' recital.
11. Audio & video recording is prohibited in classrooms, but individuals may record their own children during the recital. No flash photography is allowed.
12. A student may not be entered in more than one Level in any one year. First place winners from a previous year must progress to a higher level, so may not compete in the same level previously won.
13. Students must bring one original copy of their music with measures numbered. No photocopies will be allowed. No repertoire changes will be allowed after the registration deadline.
14. Any student entered in the wrong Level, arriving at the wrong performance time, or playing the wrong piece or the wrong movement will be permitted to perform, to receive their certificates and critique sheets, but will be disqualified from receiving an award.
15. Dress code:
Boys: Dress slacks, collared shirt and dress shoes. No athletic shoes or jeans.
Girls: Dresses or long skirts which come below the knee when sitting; dress slacks and nice blouse, or concert attire. No strapless tops or dresses will be allowed.
