Sonatina/Sonata Festival
1. Students of BNMTA members are eligible to enter the competition for a non- refundable fee of $20. Students of teachers who are not members of BNMTA will pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30.
2. Students will be divided into four groups by grade: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. All students will be given written feedback from the judges. In addition, the judge or judges shall select up to three students from each group to perform at the Honors Recital. Judges reserve the right to not select any finalists. Judges' decisions are final.
3. Students who wish to perform must have had at least 12 months of piano lessons and have permission from both parent and teacher to enroll.
4. All music must be performed from memory. No repertoire list. Students can choose any sonata or sonatina from any time period and play 1 or 2 movements from the same work. There is no time limit, but the judges may stop the performance at their discretion.
5. Music should be performed without repeats, except in the case of a da capo, which completes the form of the piece.
6. Registration, including payment, must be received by deadline. Checks should be made payable to your teacher. Teachers will collect fees from students and send one check to BNMTA.
7. BNMTA members will be expected to work, monitor or assist in some way the day of the Festival.
8. Levels 1-4 are open to the public. No audience will be allowed in the room during the competition for Levels 5 and above.
9. Practice rooms will be made available for each performer, who will be assigned one 15 minute slot only, 25 minutes before the assigned performance time. Performers should register at the front table in the lobby a minimum of 30 minutes before the assigned performance time.
10. Finalists will be announced and certificates will be presented when each group is completed. The evaluation forms will be given to the teachers only and they will give the evaluations to their students at a later time. A recital featuring finalists from each group will be held in Presser Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University. This will be immediately following completion of all groups. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the Honors Recital.
11. Audio & video recording is prohibited in classrooms, but individuals may record their own children during the recital. No flash photography is allowed.
12. Students must bring one original copy of their music with measures numbered. No photocopies will be allowed. No repertoire changes will be allowed after the registration deadline.
13. Any student entered in the wrong group, arriving at the wrong performance time, or playing the wrong piece or the wrong movement will be permitted to perform, to receive their certificates and critique sheets, but will be disqualified from receiving an award.
14. Dress code: Casual dressy, please no flip flops or jeans.
