Spring Festival Governing Rules
1. Students of BNMTA members are eligible to enter the festival for a non- refundable fee of $20. Students of teachers who are not members of BNMTA will pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30.
2. Repertoire will not be restricted to any specific music era but will exclude Classical, since that is covered in the annual Sonata/Sonatina Festival. Repertoire will be chosen using (but not limited to) AIM (Achievement in Music) and RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) repertoire lists. If your student would like to perform a piece which is not included in the Repertoire List, please submit the title, composer, and duration of piece for approval to Dr. Ilia Radoslavov at iradosla@iwu.edu no later than April 15, 2023.
3. This is a non-competitive event. The format will be similar to Solo & Ensemble Contest. Each performer will be given a rating of I, II, or III and comment sheets. “Best of Day” winners from each of the six levels will be announced after all judging sheets have been turned in, and the winners from each level will perform on the subsequent recital.
4. Students who wish to perform must have had at least 12 months of piano lessons and have permission from both parent and teacher to enroll.
5. All music must be performed from memory.
6. Music should be performed without repeats, except in the case of a da capo, which completes the form of the piece.
7. Registration, including payment, must be received by deadline. Checks should be made payable to BNMTA.
8. BNMTA members will be expected to work, monitor or assist in some way the day of the Festival.
9. Practice rooms will be made available for each performer, who will be assigned one 15 minute slot only, 25 minutes before the assigned performance time. Performers should register at the front table in the lobby a minimum of 30 minutes before the assigned performance time.
10. “Best of Day” winners will be announced when each level is completed. The evaluation forms will be given to the teachers only and they will give the evaluations to their students at a later time. A recital featuring "Best of Day" winners from each level will be held in Presser Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University. This will be immediately following completion of all Levels. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the winners' recital.
11. Audio & video recording is prohibited in classrooms, but individuals may record their own children during the recital. No flash photography is allowed.
12. A student may not be entered in more than one Level in any one year. First place winners from a previous year must progress to a higher level, so may not compete in the same level previously won.
13. Students must bring one original copy of their music with measures numbered. No photocopies will be allowed. No repertoire changes will be allowed after the registration deadline.
14. Any student entered in the wrong Level, arriving at the wrong performance time, or playing the wrong piece or the wrong movement will be permitted to perform, to receive their certificates and critique sheets, but will be disqualified from receiving an award.
15. Dress code:
Boys: Dress slacks, collared shirt and dress shoes. No athletic shoes or jeans.
Girls: Dresses or long skirts which come below the knee when sitting; dress slacks and nice blouse, or concert attire. No strapless tops or dresses will be allowed.
